The 91福利 community marked the annual Green Ghana Day by planting trees along the 鈥楽ilicon Drive鈥� avenue of the main campus in Tesano. The activity which took place on Friday, 9th June, was the university鈥檚 version of the national exercise dubbed 鈥楪reen Ghana Day鈥�.
The initiative, which is aimed at planting 10 million trees across Ghana serves as a catalyst for rejuvenating the fast-dwindling forests and restoring the landscape of the country to its lush beauty.聽
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, led the charge by planting the first tree which he christened ‘Obrempong Royal Palm’. He reiterated the call on all stakeholders to join hands in making Ghana green once again.
鈥淎s an institution, we must come together to plant trees in response to the national call. Individually, we are encouraged to do so at home but as an institution, planting these trees symbolize our participation in the national exercise,鈥� Prof. Afoakwa said.
The event was well attended with representation from all Directorates and faculties. In all, 25 seedlings of the Foxtail variety of the Royal Palm plant were planted. The VC commented on the significance of the Royal Palm tree to the aspirations of the university.聽聽
鈥淭hese trees are very symbolic. They are trees that symbolize our vision and our determination to transform the university into the Silicon Valley of Ghana. That is why we are planting them along the main road of the university named 鈥楽ilicon Drive鈥� so that once you enter the university, you see these special palm trees that tell you this is a specialized institution with a Royal touch,鈥� the VC added.聽
The Vice-Chancellor was impressed with staff turnout at the exercise. He could not but appreciate them for the massive support they gave to make this year鈥檚 Green Ghana Day a success. He said: 鈥淥n behalf of Management, I want to thank you all very much for coming out in your numbers to participate in this exercise. The turnout today is unprecedented. This is the first time I am seeing such a turnout at an exercise like this鈥�.聽
The university community ended the event by taking turns 鈥� Directorate by Directorate, Department by Department, to plant the remaining 24 trees.
Through initiatives like Green Ghana Day, the university is setting an example for other institutions and individuals to take the environment seriously and make Ghana a better place for all.
